About Salem

The Hawthorne is a short walk from many of Salem's excellent museums, restaurants and other attractions.

If you have time to explore Salem, we recommend:

  • The Peabody Essex Museum is the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States and remains one the best in country. Its collections represent Salem's history as the most important seaport in early America, engaged in trade in cod, sugar, molasses, silk, and tea, particularly between the Caribbean, Zanzibar, Russia, Sumatra, China, Japan, and Australia. It also houses 900 pieces from the wardrobe of fashion icon Iris Apfel.
  • If you want to learn more about the witch trials, we love the Salem Witch Museum. It's older, a little kitchy, but really cool. The Witch House, once the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, is a museum of everyday life in seventeenth century Salem and is the only remaining structure connected to the trials. The Salem Witch Trials Memorial honors the innocent victims of persecution who lost their lives during the panic. Adjacent to the memorial is the Old Point Burying ground, the oldest cemetery in Salem, which contains the graves of many involved in the Witch Trials.
  • For other aspects of Salem's history, check out the Friendship of Salem is a replica 1797 East Indiaman tall ship operated by The National Park Service. The House of the Seven Gables, featured in the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel of the same name, has many secrets and surprises. The site also contains Hawthorne's birthplace and beautiful waterfront views.
  • To connect to Salem's present day "witch" community, we like Pyramid Books for tarot readings and metaphysical books and HausWitch for design, crafts and spell kits. Beyond witches, Creative Salem covers local arts, culture and food events.

If you're hungry, there are a ton of restaurants in Salem. Here are some recommendations:

  • The Hawthorne Hotel has two restaurants, the upscale Nat's and the more casual Tavern. In addition, the Hawthorne runs two cafes at the Peabody Essex Museum.
  • Sea Level Oyster Bar has excellent seafood on the water.
  • Firenze Trattoria has impeccable traditional Italian in a cosy setting.
  • The Gulu Gulu Cafe is a Salem institution open 8am - 1am, known for casual food and coffee, great beer list, and live music at night.
  • Life Alive offers vegetarian, vegan, and organic food and juices.
  • A & J King has great baked goods and coffee.
  • Derby Joe is a good coffee shop.

Your presence and well-wishes are the most memorable and thoughtful gift you could give us. We realize that some of you will still want to give a gift to help us build our home and begin our married lives together. Our registry is online:
